In Sunday School my youth pastor challenged us to read Philippians 3 and John 15. So I did.
Philippians is a letter written to the people of Philippi by Paul. Chapter 3 has two parts:
No Confidence in the Flesh and
Following Paul's Example. Verses 1-14 talk about how Paul was the good guy in people's eyes and then he gave it all up for God. Verses 15-21 talk about how we should all follow Paul's example and live for God.
John is written by John and is one of the Gospels. Chapter 15 has three parts:
The Vine and the Branches, The World Hates the Disciples, and
The Work of the Holy Spirit. Verses 1- 8 I am sure you are familiar with. If not I'll paraphrase it: Basically, God is the Gardener, Jesus is the Vine, and we are the branches. We have to stay connected to the Vine (Jesus) or the Gardener (God) will discard us.
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15: 4.
Verses 9-17 can be summed up in one verse:
This is my command: Love each other. John 15:17. Verses 18-25 talk about how since we are different from the world, we will be hated and persecuted. Verses 26 and 27 talk about how the Holy Spirit will help us to testify to others.
