Principles of Design

Good Morning!

My most recent assignment for my Interior design class was to write a mock blog post on the principles of design. So I thought, why not post it on an actual blog?

The assignment:

Imagine that you are an Interior Designer renting an apartment on your own in a new city. You need to design your new living room, which currently is empty. Consider your lifestyle and personal preferences.

My inspiration picture from Houzz!

I would use a pretty sculpture on the coffee table as a focal point. It would serve as a great conversation starter. It would also be my inspiration piece that inspires the other colors, textures, etc. in the room. I would include smaller sculptures throughout the room that are similar to the main object.

I would use asymmetrical balance. I think symmetrical balance would come across as too formal and stiff. Informal balance is just what the living room needs to give it a fun, fresh vibe. As seen above, I would use the rhythm of repetition. I think it will help the room to look put together and cohesive. I would also use the rhythm of graduation in the color scheme. I would use various color values ranging from light to dark. I think this creates a beautiful layered look.
So, back to the picture:

Some things I would change:
· The colors- This room looks too cold and wintery. I think that when I sat in this room my toes would be really cold!
· Texture- I would add more interesting texture. I think a furry rug in here would look great, along with some more visual texture!
· Storage- I would have to add a bookcase to store some of my favorite books
· Plant- I would add a plant in one of the corners to bring in color and life.

Some things I would not change:
· The mass- This room’s mass is perfect for me. (Mass is the amount of patterns or objects in a room. It describes how crowded or empty the room is.)
· The coffee table- I love how it just blends into its surroundings.
· The windows- The abundance of natural light in this room is amazing!

So that's it! I hope you enjoyed it!
